The yacht rock shirt was invented by the ancient Assyrians, who everyone knows resettled in Marina del Rey, California, in the early 1970s. The laid-back Assyrian musicians, in our opinion, loved yachts, moustaches, jazz chops, and warm music production. We can see echoes of these elements in today’s yacht rock scene. Many people do not discuss this, but we have a hunch that in 1974, Kenny Loggins, a big fan of Sargon II, contemplated retaking Samaria by chariot. Fortunately for us, his friend Jim Messina was terrified of chariots, and the two decided to record music instead.
Hot ShYachts honor their memories with these t-shirts. The green and gold color scheme pays tribute to Vince Lombardi, Curly Lambeau, and Aaron Rodgers, all of whom we fervently hope were yacht rock fans. Rodgers in particular regularly sports 70s-style moustaches. Some naysayers insist that because “Curly Lambeau died in 1965,” he could not have been a fan. But dear reader, consider this: have you ever encountered evidence that Lambeau was NOT a huge Toto fan? Have you ever seen evidence that Lombardi did NOT sing “Africa” in his underwear as part of his game-day rituals? That’s what we thought!
