View DJ Lighting in its Historical Context

As you view DJ lighting, contemplate the miracle that is the modern dance floor! There are excellent reasons why places like Spencer’s Gifts have thrived for years. Although it’s not exactly subtle, it WORKS! People laugh, but they dance. And that, my friends, is what we want!

1946 Mirror Ball

Consider the mirror ball. DJ Fuzzy Logic loves the 1970s and disco every bit as much as you do. Even so, the mirror ball dates back to 1897! Check out the 1946 mirror ball above. Even better, if you love your vintage films, check out Walter Ruttman’s Berlin: Symphony of a Metropolis for mirror ball footage from the 1920s! In those days, people didn’t call it a mirror ball. Rather, its proper name was a Myriad Reflector. Finally, you can dazzle all your friends with your lighting terminology! Or maybe just your nerdier, historically inclined friends.

Dancers now take electric light for granted, but consider how radically that affected the dance experience! In the 1940s, Stanley McCandless formulated a wildly popular “light plot” that influenced dancers for years. Read the details of his theory here. Alwin Nikolais advanced the theory further. Think about how we expect it for dance productions, drama, and most concerts. Even architects such as Stephen Holl recognize lighting as part of the built environment. Scientist and light designers recognize and study the psychological effects of color. Most importantly, your guests associate lighting with excitement and the freedom to express themselves and move!
