Meet milwaukee’s phdj
Meet Milwaukee’s PhDJ, DJ Fuzzy Logic®! DJ Fuzzy Logic is known for his versatility, his easygoing nature, and his ability to relate to a wide range of musicians and audiences. He’s done nights dedicated to global bass, salsa/bachata, yacht rock, jazz, metal, funk/disco, drag queens, and more!
Fuzzy Logic started DJing as the summer co-host of The Soul Patrol at 91.5 FM WECI in Richmond, Indiana. This was the late 80s, so DJs spun vinyl. We were heavily influenced by the nearby Dayton/Cincinnati scene, arguably the world capital of funk. Midnight Star, Zapp, Ohio Players, and Slave were big, but hip hop was exciting, and we were the only people to play it on local stations. Think Kool Moe Dee, LL, Tribe, Ice Cube, and BDP, throw in some New Jack Swing, and of course add a 60-minute Quiet Storm at the end.
Musical Background
I grew up playing classical piano and pipe organ and singing in choirs. I played guitar in bands in South Bend, IN, Houston, TX, and then Milwaukee. Smart-aleck originals, zydeco, death metal…if fun people wanted to play it, I’d do it! Eventually, I got back into playing boogie and G-funk records with producer Brandon “Brazil” Reyes. We did all-vinyl Sirius Booty nights for five years. He started bartending, but I went digital and carried on as Fuzzy Logic, eventually doing fun stuff like DJing for Milwaukee hip hop icon Kool Keith.
What is fuzzy logic, and what does it have to do with music?
Meet Milwaukee’s PhDJ, the coolest nerd you know! Fuzzy logic is a philosophical concept that says that much of life is not binary, not a series of ones and zeroes. It is a flexible reasoning that allows us to work with life’s “shades of grey.” There are no absolutes in fuzzy logic, so there is no absolute “good music.” I think the best DJ dance parties reflect that. I’m from the Larry Levan school, and I believe that we have a better party when things are wide open. We don’t have to choose between rare grooves and hits, between past and present, between the mind and the booty. When you book DJ Fuzzy Logic®, you book versatility and flexibility.
Fuzzy Logic as a fight against segregation
Unfortunately, music has been used to segregate people. For example, in the 1920s, record companies separated southern music into “race records” (allegedly by and for black Americans) and “hillbilly records” (allegedly by and for white Americans). Fuzzy logic allows us to move past this damaging cultural thinking and embrace the ways that cultures have always melded and influenced each other. That’s what good dance floors do, too!
Or maybe it’s because I love fuzzy animals like Rico Suave…
What do you teach, anyway?
English, Creating Your Life’s Meaning, and critical multiculturalism. In spite of the efforts of some people.
